Papa Murphy’s Take ‘n’ Bake Pizza

Have you seen these “Take 'n' Bake” pizza places that seem to be popping up everywhere? We have seen them, and quite honestly we haven’t understood the appeal. Why would we want to cook our own pizza when we can get one already cooked from a traditional pizza joint for the same price? We have never had success with rising crust or grocery store varieties of cook-at-home pizzas. They are fine if you want “frozen pizza” taste, but none have compared with carry-out pizza in the taste category. Papa Murphy’s advertises that they are cheaper, because you don’t pay for delivery, or tip a driver, or pay tax. That doesn’t really compute, since you have to pick up your pizza from Papa Murphy’s, to compare apples-to-apples (or pizza-to-pizza) you have to compare to carry-out, not delivery. With carry-out, there is no delivery charge or tipping either. Tax – maybe - depends on where you live (groceries vs. restaurant tax). Take ‘n’ Bake does have the convenience of control over the time of dinner, but that is not a huge factor, at least not for us.

So…we had this coupon. So…we decided to try it (it helps that they are strategically located next to the video store (which hit me with a late charge – grrrr)). We got the Papa Murphy’s Papa-roni pizza with pepperoni rolled into the crust. The verdict? It was surprisingly good. Suprisingly like traditional carry-out pizza. We will probably go there again. But, they will have to compete for our business solely on taste.

Wow, I forgot to factor in operator error – what if we burn it? Then we are out money and dinner. Yikes!

The Papa Murphy’s website does not have pricing – I think these places are all franchises. Our store prices range from $7 for large cheese to $16 for large double crust. They also have salads, calzones, lasagna, and chocolate chip cookie dough to bake your own cookies.

One final note. Seems like this stuff is loaded with sodium, more so than other pizza we usually get. Dehydration kicked in a few hours after consumption.
